As we move ever further into the digital age, our audiovisual heritage seems to be taken increasingly for granted. However, much of our filmed history and cinema has already been lost forever.
Film archivists and filmmakers from around the world explain what film preservation is and why it is needed. Our protagonists are custodians of film whose work safeguards motion pictures. This documentary is an homage to them all.
'A River of Sounds, the Reflection of Time' covers the extensive work the musician and ethnomusicologist Joaquín Díaz has carried out in the popular culture field. Díaz pioneered the folk movement in Spain in the 1960s, and paved the way for upcoming artists, while he also recovered songs, talents and folklore from the past, soon becoming one of the most respected figures in the field.
Amancio Prada's outstanding performance of 'La Voz Descalza' ('The Bare Voice') at the Teatro Principal, in Palencia, is captured in this concert film. Prada's lyrics stem from the mystical work authored by poet Teresa de Jesús, which he has mastered during his career and he has set to music. This performance was part of the commemorative events of the 500th anniversary of the birth of Teresa de Jesús.
Musician and ethnographer Joaquín Díaz turned his back on fame to pursue a life and career fully dedicated to the research of folklore and popular culture, recording and preserving songs, knowledge, and stories that could have otherwise easily disappeared. Coproduced with TVE (Spanish TV), 'Words against Oblivion' includes rare footage carefully selected from RTVE's vast archives.
